April Updates

April 18, 2006

Hey Everybody. It's been 13 weeks here in South Africa, and I took my first break. A friend came to town to visit and we went on a road trip through the great desert to Capetown, home of beach bums and beautiful mountains.

We climbed Table mountain, the prime attraction in the city. We also visited Robben Island (Where Mandela was imprisoned with other political prisoners) and it is much like Alcatraz in principle. We also went to Cape Point where you can observe the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. We then went home via the Garden route, one of the most beautiful scenic drives in all Africa. during the trip we met many cool people and had some very interesting conversations. Capetown and the coast area is a wonderful place, and I was amazed.

This week, some light work and then off to Kruger Game Park to see Rhinos, Elephants, and possibly, the elusive Leopard

All things considered, I am loving Africa. Please continue to pray for the church here that it would continue to build up the Saints and evangelize the lost. It's amazing and humbling to think that I'm even here...oh that God would use me more. Please pray that he will continue to work in me to show His love to those around me.

So the past 7 days have been a bit intense. Exactly 1 week ago, my Pastor, Brian, interrupted 2 guys attempting to hijack his wife, Anita, in the driveway. They were armed with a 9mm pistol, and threatened to shoot their kids (who were in the back seat of the car) if she didn't comply. They got all her jewelry including her wedding ring, and the keys to the car and house, but ran off without getting the car.

Praise the Lord that no one was harmed. Please pray for the crime here in Jo'burg. It's easy to look down on those who turn to crime, but they are no different than you or me. They need the Lord, and a new heart.

So the rest of Thursday, and all of Friday, we reset all the alarms and got the car re-keyes. The reason it took 2 days is because we had to reset all the codes and remote keys for not only Brian's house, but the Church and the Orphanages as well. So I got a crash course in binary electronics and security schematics.

The weekend was actually quite good, excellent fellowship, challenging sermons. THen on Monday, Brian's living room cieling collapsed with his family in the room, it crumbled away from the wall, so they were able to get out in time, but it was very close, and quite scary. Praise the Lord, again, that no one was hurt.

So this week I learned how to replace dry wall and ceiling boards, and how to mix and apply plaster. Here they call dry wall "Rhino board" and plaster is "Rhino glide". I guess they think it sounds cool and african.

So, all that to say, sometimes you plan your steps, and sometimes the Lord just puts you on a different path, and it's all to our ultimate benefit and His ultimate Glory. What an amazing God we serve.
